NJ Secretary of Agriculture Douglas Fisher visits West Windsor Farmers Market Sat 10/18

CHRISTIE ADMINISTRATION TO CELEBRATE FALL FARMERS MARKETS

New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher will visit the West Windsor Community Farmers Market on Saturday, October 18 and join with township officials in honoring the market for being named one of the top farmers markets in the nation.

The West Windsor Community Farmers Market won top celebrated farmers market in New Jersey and placed 21st nationwide this year in an annual contest held by American Farmland Trust.  West Windsor Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh will present the market with a proclamation honoring the market for its achievements during a ceremony at 9:40 a.m.

The market was first started in 2004 and now has 15 farmers and 11 artisan food vendors during the peak of the summer.  The market runs every Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Vaughn Drive commuter parking lot of the Princeton Junction Train Station through November 22.

There are 148 community farmers markets in the state, eight of which are new this season.   Farmers who attend these markets sell produce they’ve picked at the peak of ripeness within 24 hours of sale to ensure the best taste and highest quality.  Many of the farmers accept WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers and SNAP food stamp cards.

Eating Jersey Fresh fruits, vegetables and other agricultural products can go a long way to improving overall health.  Eating locally also is a good choice for protecting our environment by reducing the miles a meal travels between farm and fork, lessening fuel consumption.  In addition, choosing locally grown products helps keep New Jersey farmers on their land, preserving the Garden State’s quality of life.

Secretary Fisher will visit the West Windsor Community Farmers Market 9:30 a.m. Saturday, October 18 in the southbound Vaughn Dr. parking lot of the Princeton Junction train station off of Alexander Rd., for GPS, use 2 Vaughn Dr., Princeton, NJ.
